self driving in South Korea country side

Hi,

We are a couple planing to rent a car and touring South Korea (excluding Seoul), over 8 days start end of this month March.

We have lots of driving exprerience worldwide, but not sure if it easy in Korea country sides as we don%26#39;t know Korean and don%26#39;t know if signs off the highways are as good and in english too.

We would be happy to get travellers suggestions and advice regarding this matter, thanks,

stay out of Seoul, and it%26#39;s fine.

Signs are international. If you mea direction and destination sings, then they are always in Hangul and in a romanised script. This MAY vary so you may find Gyeongju and Kyongju, for example, but it really is very easy.

Many main roads are toll roads, and expressways may be one lane each way- not a dual carriageway. Middle lanes on mutlilane highways may be bus or HOV lanes. You will find speed cameras in many places- these are inidcated by a sign saying in Englsih ';speed camera 300 metres'; or whatever, and by everyone temporarily slowing down.

Drive in Seoul= madman, unless Korean or very experienced, however.

Driving in Korea as foreigner, it might be hard but you can try with care.

Problems are below,

1. It is hard to read road signs, even though lots of signs are written in Korean and English.

2. It has been improved a lot but still many Koreans are incautious drivers. So if you drive, you should be careful.

3. It might be hard to get a good road map which is written in English.

Thank you both for the information and tips regarding driving in Korea. As I have mentioned we%26#39;ll not drive in Seoul, we only will rent the car and get out to the country, we think we%26#39;ll use the GSP navigator, we have been told we can get in English. In case we%26#39;ll not be able to find in English, can you advise if it is possible at all to use navigator in Korean? as we don%26#39;t know Korean. Thanks again we sure we%26#39;ll make it and enjoy travelling and driving a car in this beautiful country as we saw in the pictures.

I must tell you that I have driven out of Seoul on many occasions and have never found any problem. I have gone wrong in my directions when my passenger was asleep but have always spotted the sign just after I went past it, and so have got back on the right road. The only thing I don%26#39;t like is expressway driving in heavy traffic, when incautious driving is fairly common.

If you can%26#39;t get an Engl lang sat nav, I%26#39;d say don%26#39;t bother, as you won%26#39;t be able to work out how to put data in.

I have found where to buy in Seoul English map for my Garmin GPS nevigator, so I%26#39;ll go there first thing and buy it, hope it will help me with the driving in the countryside of South Korea, will arive to Korea in few days... thanks a lots for all your advices.
