  • 5 Days Geography Trip

Hi! I am a Geography Teacher who is thinking of organising a Geography Trip for my students. I am thinking of visiting some of S Korea MNCs like Hyundai, Kia, Samsung. Would this be possible? Looking at industries in Korea.

Would also want to visit the DMZ zone.

    Maybe some Hi-Tech farms.

Are there any other geographical aspect which i can look for in Seoul? Any say volcanic activity? I know jeju island would have plenty, but i am afraid 5 days would be too rush.

staying in incheon; would like to sight see in seoul...Help!

arriving at 5pm at incheon airport and booked in at the best western for the night before onward travel the next day on a 7pm flight. My wife and I would love to go into seoul and do some sightseeing; what would be the best plan ? any help advice comments gretfully accepted

    thankyou

staying in incheon; would like to sight see in seoul...Help!

    what Best Western? the Premier??

staying in incheon; would like to sight see in seoul...Help!

    Yes!

Take shuttle to airport, and ideally check in then limo bus to City Hall. Walk east along Eulji road towards the SK Telecom tower (looks like a flip open mobile phone), and there turn left, cross Cheong stream go along the road with the piano keys in the mdile (northwards). When you get to Jong Road (main road, utrn right to next interesection; walk up Insa Dong. At end, if time, turn tright and go to Changeok palalce for a tour (closed Mondays, need to be there for 1:30 tour- only tours possible).

Leave Seoul with at least 2.5 hourse before your flight, more if you%26#39;ve got to get back to hotel for luggage.

    Would be my preferred day.

ethelman thank you for your suggestion. I was thinking of taking a tour bus from the airport as an alternative,

    what do you think ?

If you are not confident about finding your way, then it%26#39;s not a bad idea. Here is one tour bus info, 鈥isitkorea.or.kr/enu/SI/SI_EN_3_6.jsp鈥?/a>

or simply go into town and grab the sightseeing bus. It%26#39;s an all day on/off bus.

    Astoria Hotel

I am booked to stay at the Astoria and on a hotel website, it suggests 605-1 to Sejong Hotel and a fairly short walk. Can anyone tell me if the above info is accurate, how much the bus will cost and provide directions from Sejong to Astoria?

Is there a better way to go?

    Thanks.

    Astoria Hotel

By the way, the Sejong Hotel website says the airport bus is 6015.

Also, about how far is it from the Sejong Hotel to the Astoria Hotel on foot?

    Thanks.

    Namsan Guest House

I am travelling to Seoul next Feb and is therefore looking for lodging now. I am considering staying in Namsan Guesthouse. Can any tell me the rooms are clean and is it near subway? Are they any attraction near by?

    Namsan Guest House

Yes the rooms are reasonably clean, near the subway but there is a little hill to walk up ( no big deal )... and its near myeondong with lots of shops and namsan tower is around the corner, many eatery there.

with the subway around the corner, you can get to most places and its like 6000won to dongdaemun if you want to do some all niter shopping.

    Things must buy at Korea

    Halo....

Any one can tell me any things (food, skin care or clothes) that must and worth to buy at Korea.

What is the best souvenir that have to buy for korea trip?

    Tq.

    Things must buy at Korea

Skincare products: BB cream, whitening mask pack

Food products: Loose teas (Chrysanthemum, lotus flower and etc.) Dried seaweed packs. Chocolate with hongsam roots inside (It sounds weird but it actually taste better than any other jinsang products) Gochujang (Korean chilly paste)

Accessory: I love those small silk purses I bought at Insadong and Namdaemoon market. Many of NY friends compliments it. If you like glittering kinds, you can find cubic accessories everywhere in Korea!

    Things must buy at Korea

    Thanks for your info.

Ya..BB cream are very famous there now and i wont miss out the bb cream ad some cosmetic products because it is cheaper than where i get from here.

Chocolate with hingsam roots never heard abt it but i will try it also. Seaweed must to buy.

small silk purses...ok....will take a look for that.

    Thank you.

  • Daewoo Inn, has anyone stayed there recently...

If so, I%26#39;d greatly appreciate your comments as to finding it from the subway, its location, cleanliness, est. (I read a post about people paying $60.00 to get picked up at ICN airport).

Also, its distance from interesting parts of town to walk around.

    Thank you.

Daewoo Inn, has anyone stayed there recently...

not stayed there, but walked past it on many occasions (assuming its Daewoo Motel you%26#39;re talking about)

Look on their website for details as to where it is and how to get there. A taxi from airport will cost you at least US60, more like 80 if heavy traffice; but the KAL bus is about US11 (14,000 won).

It IS 5 mins max from City Hall, and from metro stations.

If your question is ';where is City Hall in relation to sights?';, then it%26#39;s close to Myeongdong, palaces etc. But Seoul is big and you%26#39;d need a long (30 min) walk or a metro ride to Dongdaemun market, for example.

  • Pyongchang Residence COOP Sweet House

    Hi,

Has anybody stayed at Pyongchang Coop Sweet House recently? I cant find any reviews of the place. Will be staying there this December.

Is transportation easily available from the hotel to nearby ski resorts Yongpyong and Phoenix? How far is it to the ski resorts?

Any rental cars available in the Pyoungchang area?

    Thanks.

    Pyongchang Residence COOP Sweet House

And I%26#39;m contemplating whether to rent a car from Seoul or take the shuttle to the ski resort.

Coming from a warmer clmate country I%26#39;m concerned about my family getting stranded in the cold for too long. The shuttle buses from Yangpyeong bus station to Phoenix resort is at 2 hour interval.

Is renting a car my best bet? Then again, is driving in Seoul easy? Are the road signs on expressway and state roads fr Seoul to ski resorts in English?

    Tks again!

    Pyongchang Residence COOP Sweet House

I have driven in Seoul; if you know the city it%26#39;s barely possible. If you don%26#39;t, I would forget it.

Roads are wide, and lanes are many; traffic is usually dense and unforgiving. Signs are good, but don%26#39;t give you much more than the names of the next intersections in each direction.

My Korean friends thought I was mad to drive, and after doing so, I was inclined to agree.

    Hi,

Thks, that pretty much helped me make up my mind. Driving is definitely off my list now

Guess you%26#39;re right, would be insane to attempt that!

    tria hotel

came across this hotel in searching for a place to stay.

Seems like it is a boutique hotel but rates are definately very reasonable.

However, no reviews yet on TA.

Any comments from anyone on this hotel?

    tria hotel

    where in Seoul is it?

    tria hotel

a bit odd; website says Teheranro, but it%26#39;s not.

You%26#39;d need to spend money to get there, or walk from the Renaissance, and it%26#39;s not in an area that I%26#39;d associate with much going on. On the side of Yeoksam Hill in a generally residential area, I think.

I%26#39;ve walked down from the Yeoksam hilltop road towards COEX recently, but didn%26#39;t see this place.

What are the rates? I stayed in a suite in Grand Intercont for about 220,000 won (inc breakfast, but plus tax) last week.

The rates are KW130,000 a night for a royal deluxe room.

The pictures of on the website looks decent.

    http://www.triahotel.co.kr/html/eng/main.html

The hotel doesn%26#39;t have a restaurant. I wonder if there are any places nearby to have breakfast.

I don%26#39;t know what you like for breakfast; there are Starbucks about 10 mins away, and bakeries etc. However, KR restaurants don%26#39;t serve western breakfasts. Ramada Renaissance would do a breakfast, of course.

    Wheelchair in restaurants?

I am planning to go to Seoul with friends and was wondering if the same rules apply to wheelchairs as they do shoes in terms of what cannot be brought inside to the seating area of a restaurant? I can walk a little so I don%26#39;t mind leaving my chair nearby but I think I will have trouble sitting on the floor as I have poor balance, nevermind eat at the same time. Would most places have a small chair or something I can borrow to sit on if I have to leave my wheelchair outside the dining room?

    Wheelchair in restaurants?

you won%26#39;t want to go into a sit on the floor part; most places have choices of chair areas and floor areas. So opt for the former.

    Wheelchair in restaurants?

We will be with a large group so I may not always have a choice of sitting in the western section.

you will have to; the table is too close to floor for you to sit in any chair and reach it.

if instead you sit on the floor, you%26#39;ll find some restaurants have ';seats'; that rest on the floor and have a back rest to support your back.

When I%26#39;ve been with people in wheelchairs in Korea, there%26#39;s never been an issue- as you go in, the staff take you and your party to a table.

If going into an ';on the floor';, you normally need to step up onto the ondol floor, and often you go into a separate room (1 for each party). There are lots of big retaurants in Seoul; small ones will be a problem as many involve stairs, esp in Myeongdong.

incidentally, it%26#39;s not the western section; you%26#39;ll find no westerners in many restaurants, and Koreans often prefer the chairs.

  • shopping in seoul

    hi, experts,

read from the forum and noted that the popular shopping areas mentioned are Dongdaemun; Namdaemun and Myeong-dong

Do all the 3 places sell the same types of things/fashions? Cos whether if it is necesaary to spend 3 days on each of these 3 areas to shop?

    thanks

    shopping in seoul

Namdaemun and Myeongdong are across the streets from one another so you can cover both places in one day. Start off at Myeongdong which is like Orchard Road in Singapore where you get the best that the city offers. Namdaemun is one big cluster of shops and stores that operate round the clock so you can save this place after you%26#39;re done with Myeongdong. You can find everything under the sun in Namdaemun not just clothes but also handicrafts, shoes, bags, food products, etc.

You%26#39;ll need at least one full day, preferably three days if you%26#39;re a thorough shopper, for Dongdaemun which has many different buildings, eg Doota, selling clothes, accessories, watches, etc. Unlike Myeongdong which offers the latest trends, you can find something for every style persona in Dongdaemun.

If you still have time, check out Apgujeongdong and Sinchon. Apgujeondong is where the branded stores are though there are department stores as well Sinchon is the university town so you%26#39;ll find streetwear and youth fashion.

If you%26#39;re looking for handicrafts, visit Insadong on Sunday where the street is closed to traffic for street performances. So you can enjoy the shows as you shop. There is also a big duty-free govt-run souvenir emporium in Insadong.

If you%26#39;re visiting any of the big name department stroes like Shinshigae, etc. take note that all of them are closed on Mondays.

    shopping in seoul

I recommend Dongdaemun %26amp; Myeongdong! Dongdaemun market is fantastic to walk around at night. There are also a lot of shopping centres round here, all of which are open all night. For example, Hello APM, Doota, Migliore. Dongdaemun is great if you want %26#39;genuine fake%26#39; sunglasses, bags, shoes, jewellery etc. Excellent quality.

Myeongdong has every shop, every brand imaginable and it just shopping heaven. Great for picking up new cosmetics, make up etc... x

Also, if you can, check out the Lotte Shopping Mall. I%26#39;m not sure of the exact location but think it is somewhere near city hall. Anyway, most people know where it is. It%26#39;s heaven. x

    hi, frappeo and jenlafemme,

thanks so much for the tips on the shopping venues. I will be printing this info out and bring along for my trip.

My teenage daughters will be too excited to read them. they are the korean wave craze and the shopping queens.

How about Iteawon and ';fashion street'; near Yongsei University? Is it worth going?

I wanna get Hard Rock Cafe Tee also, where can i find it in Seoul

HRC is in Itaewon. The places mentioned are the best places for shopping. The fashion street near ewha univ is worth checking out.

    Dear Jenlafemma,

Can i know whether Dr Jart, BRTC and skin79 skin care product can find from Myeondong or Insadong? If yes, which part of Myeongdong? Besides, where to buy skin care are more cheaper?

Myeongdong is an area, not a street,so not possible to give an easy direction. It will, I%26#39;m surte, have what you want, but you%26#39;ll need to wander round. I%26#39;d start from Euljiro 1 ga station and walk south from there to the top, make a right and then right again and so on to zig zag through.

    places to visit

can you suggest best places to visit in tongyeong since we will be traveling only for one day? I mean, beautiful places which are near from each other..

Elevators at Subways/Bus and Train Stations

    Hi,

Will be going to Seoul in a week and would like to get more info on:

Are there elevators(lifts) at Seoul subways, Bus Stations(eg DongSeoul) and Train Stations (Cheongynyanggi). Is it possible to transfer from stations without lugging our bags up n down the stairs?

Are there any storage service at hotels? I learnt that the storage at subways are for small boxes only.

Is it possible to go from Nami Island to Yongpyong/Phoenix ski resort? Are there any buses/shuttles that go directly from there? How much is the fare? Is the route ok?(the roads not too winding, narrow or deserted?) or is it better to go to Yongpyong/Phoenix from Seoul?

    Thanks!

Elevators at Subways/Bus and Train Stations

imn my experience most subway stations do have lifts for the disabled. Often there are several different levels with one lift for each; the exit from one lift may be nowhere near the entrance to the next one up, so you will need to look at the station map carefully.

Elevators at Subways/Bus and Train Stations

    Thanks for the info.

What about signs at bus terminals, are there English signs or solely in Korean?

    Thanks again.

Buses (short distance) scare me in Seoul. Nothing vaguely helpful, even if you read Hangul. You need a lot of insider knowledge; even the colour is vitally important, to distinguish between local, longer idstance, express, seat and hang-on-tight types.

Long distance ones are better- there%26#39;s at least SOME info in Roman characters in most cases. I think bus stations will be OK in Seoul.

    Outside, another thing entirely.

If you can find a young-ish person- in the absence of signs- they will be less shy of trying their English.

    4. ';winter boots/shoes';

    5. Leather gloves

    Pls advise. Thank You.

    Winter Clothes for -0 degree

Holidays81, I feel you pain as you live in Singapore, it won%26#39;t be easy for you to get winter clothes there if not very expensive. But 1st week of Jan is very cold in Korea. It won%26#39;t be much fun if you are sick with cold while you are traveling. If you traveling mostly by bus, be prepare for big temp difference between heated bus and bitter cold outdoors. It%26#39;s better for you to dress in layers so you can peel off clothes when you are in indoors.

Here is my tip for money saving

    1. Pantyhose is great substitute for longjohn. You may also pack gym clothes such as leggings, and tight fitting cotton shirts (though they are not as effective as woolen thermals).

    2. If down feather jacket is too expensive, get padded jacket or ski jacket. They are lighter than woolen coats but keeps you pretty warm. Check out some winter jackets at http://www.llbean.com

*If you get jacket with hood that%26#39;s better option so you won%26#39;t have to buy hat separately. About 80% body heat escapes through head.

    3. Fleece or cashmere scarves, hat and gloves are lightweight and warm. no need for leather gloves. I would also get good quality cashmere cardigan sweater so you can take off once you are indoor.

    4. AS per shoes, as I replied to your earlier post, don%26#39;t try to cut corner in this department.

    Enjoy snowfighting!

    Winter Clothes for -0 degree

Hi, Nos 1,2, 4,7,8,9,11,12,13 and 14 are outdoor so you really need to keep yourself warm with winter jackets and thermal wear. Places 2 and 3 in jeju Island are by the ocean and is very windy. Everland is an outdoor themepark whereas Lotte is half outdoor and half indoor - you will probably be very sweaty after all the rides and it%26#39;s cumbersome to wear so many layers. Places No. 9, 13, 14 are shopping streets. Places No 12 is a 10 minute stop for photos as it%26#39;s a security area, Place No. 6 is another 10 min stop for an ';experience';.

We wore 100% thermal long sleeve vest inside, followed by a long sleeve 100% wool jumper, top up with a winter jacket to stop the wind and chills creeping through your skin!. Next we warm up with scarf, gloves and a beannie. For us, it%26#39;s good enough as we come from a 4 season country. You might want to do more. Hope this helps.

Hey, wwhich travel agent you following? i am going end of nov with ctc at $1.8k. how about u?

    Hi blee246,

Thanks for the advise on ways to cut corners.

    Haha.

    Thanks

Cotton thermals are good to have. I agree with the pantyhose idea. Layer your clothing, start with a thin cotton shirt that tucks well into your pants and does not allow drafts. Maybe two thin cotton shirts and then a cotton thermal shirt over them, or a thick pullover or a sweater. It%26#39;s important to cover your head and ears, and layer your clothing. . A hooded jacket and ear muffs works well. You can sometimes take off the hood and still have your ears protected. Definitley some wool gloves.

    hi hardycards,

    Thanks for your advise.

I will get the cotton thermals n down jackets.

Is it good idea to get leather gloves?

    Thanks

Leather or synthetic, it%26#39;s up to you. It depends on what you like and how much you want to spend. You don%26#39;t NEED leather.

    sofitel vs JW

    Hello there,

We are a family of 4. Two adults, one child 6 and an infant. We are going to Seoul for two weeks in Dec-Jan. We are chosing between Sofitel Amb, and JW Marriott. We are looking for a childfriendly hotel, good indoor swimmingpool, a good gym and simple availability of authentic Korean Streetfood as well as nice shopping, not fancy shopping.

Could any of you experienced people out there tell me wich would be the best option for us. And does anybody have any experience of the renovation that goes on at the JW?

    thanx

    sofitel vs JW

i was born in seoul and know many things about seoul though i live in the uk now.

regarding the facilities and quality, jw marriott would be obviously better choise than sofitel.

however sofitel%26#39;s location is much much better than jw.

if you stay in sofitel you can easily reach to central district of seoul, many shopping mall, historic places as well.

but if in jw, you can only see so many and huge size of apratmetn.

the only advatage of the jw is it is close to the city%26#39;s coach station which can make you depart all over the south korea. that%26#39;s all.

i%26#39;ve heard recently sofitel moved up to 5 star graded from 4 in korea.

hence i think sofitel would be much better for your family.

    enjoy your trip there卢

  • Weather in Korea now

I%26#39;ll be going to Jeju and Seoul next week. Can someone advise the weather condition now? Is it colder or warmer than usual?

As I%26#39;m travelling with young and old, please advise if those chemical handpads and toe pads are useful in keeping warm? Also, how do i protect the knees of the old as i%26#39;m afraid the arthritis rheumatism may get worse in the cold?

    Weather in Korea now

Tomorrow Dec 4, 2008 (THU) after the rain, the temp will drop to -7 in the morning..for Seoul but still warmer than last year.

    Weather in Korea now

    Hi Zeromuzik,

    here%26#39;s the Seoul temperature forcecast from google;

    Fri -3°C | -12°C

    Sat -3°C | -7°C

    Sun 4°C | 2°C

    Mon 9°C | 2°C

We were there last Nov 24 - 29th. Average was about 7 celcius. The one day we had rain the temp was about 4 with wind chill dragging that down to 1 or 2 degrees.

To help keep warm, wear a hat. There%26#39;s a lot of argument about how much heat is lost via the scalp but simple fact is wearing a hat has got to help much the same way as using gloves or thick socks.

I don%26#39;t think the cold will effect the arthritis very much. Rubbing in some anti inflamatory cream may help though. Suggest you get some advice on this from your local chemist.

    Cheers.

My son lives in Incheon and he told me two days ago it was 19 F.

    Westin Busan

I know the Westin in Busan has an indoor pool - but I can%26#39;t work out whether it has an outdoor one as well. I know it%26#39;s next to the beach but would like to know if there%26#39;s an outdoor swimming pool. Thanks.

    Westin Busan

I%26#39;ve never been, but it seems unlikely reading their website. They mention loads of things and I would expect them to mention an outdoor pool if they had one.

The ';beach'; - not necessarily what I%26#39;d call a beach, to be honest- is said to be private, so I think it%26#39;s even less likely.

    Westin Busan

I would recommend Paradise Hotel Busan if you have other choices. They have well-known outdoor spa and swimming pool running all seasons. Visit the website …paradisehotel.co.kr/en/spa_fitness/pool.asp. Outdoor spa so famous that you could enjoy it looking over the sea.

I have stayed at the Westin Busan. I don%26#39;t remember an outdoor pool but I wasn%26#39;t looking as we were there in April.

The beach is not private it is a public beach. It is a sandy beach but not a beautiful one. Also they don%26#39;t want you to get in the water there. If you go into the water above your knees you are told to get out. My son has surfed at the beach there and it always creates a ruckus.

The hotel has a wonderful walking trail or walkway by it. It is very nice with gardens and statues along the walk. I really liked the location of the hotel you can walk around very easy.

    Snowfall in February?

hi, we%26#39;re planning on taking the group tour to seoul this coming february 2009 (probably on the 2nd week) will there be snowfall at this time? or just snow covered landscapes?

it will be our first time to seoul and will also be our first time to experience snowfall, so we are really hoping that there will be snow :)

    Snowfall in February?

    anyone please care to answer??

    Snowfall in February?

It%26#39;s a question that doesn%26#39;t have an answer, I%26#39;m afraid.

It may snow; it may be too cold for snow; it may be warm enough for rain.

On average, you are probably 50% likely to see sonw on the ground, I%26#39;d estimate.

Take lip balm and moisturiser again the cold wind drying your face.

thanks for the reply and the advice on the lip balm/moisturizer.

any ideas on what kind of clothing we should bring? do we prepare for winter wear(jackets, gloves, scarves, beanies etc) or would that be going overboard?

a couple of years back it was minus 14 C in Feb; often just above freezing. Rarely warmer than 3-4 deg C.

Money transfer for a long stay

I am planning to stay in Seoul for a year. I won%26#39;t be working, so money will have to come from my british bank account.

What are the options in terms of moving money around?

    - exchange it beforehand from a high street bank?

    - bring cash with me and exchange it at a korean bank

    - wire it to a korean bank account. If so, are there any low-commission services such as tranzfers for GBP or AUD -%26gt; KRW, or am I stuck with being ripped off?

    Thanks

  • Rental of Hanbok

    Hi,

I would like to rent a Hanbok in Daejeon for one day. I will be staying in Riveria. Anyone can advise where can i rent one and how much is it?

    Thanks!

    Rental of Hanbok

Unfortunately for you, renting Hanbok is not that easy since many Koreans wear it only couple of times of year. Many wedding hall will rent out ceremonial hanbok but usually that is added service to rent a hall, so I am not sure if you can only rent hanbok only. Perhaps you can ask your hotel if they rent out hanbok, since many hotels are popular wedding venues these days.

  • Yong Pyeong- Seoul-Busan-Jeju Doable in 9 days?

My friend and I plan to travel to Korea from Dec 27-Jan. 4 for the holidays. We want to go skiing in Yong Pyeong since my friend is also interested to see the scenes from Winter Sonata drama series. So I was hoping if you guys can help me out.

Is it possible to go directly from Incheon airport to Yong Pyeong stay one night there then ski the next morning (we%26#39;re beginners)? We%26#39;re sort of in a budget though. Not sure where we can stay there. Haven%26#39;t done my research for skiing.

We already have a hotel booking in Dongdaemon from Dec. 28-30. Then we plan to take the train/subway to Busan stay for 2 nights then take a ferry to Jeju Island for 2 nights then fly back to Seoul. (Haven%26#39;t done any hotels or train bookings yet though.) Should we book this in advance? We%26#39;re not sure about the number of people travelling to Busan during the New Yea.

Yong Pyeong- Seoul-Busan-Jeju Doable in 9 days?

New year is not really much in Korea; Lunar New year (or ';Chinese New year';) is the festival. So I don%26#39;t think train (KTX?) to Busan is a problem.

    why stay Busan?

Unless you%26#39;ve a friend or relative there, I wouldn%26#39;t see it as a great destination. Might well be cheaper and more conveneint to take a plane from Gimpo airport direct to Jeju, IMHO.

I know I keep advocating it, but Gyeongju- not THAT far from Busan - would be a far better destination; you could then either fly from Busan airport, or I think Ulsan airport has flights to Jeju.

Yong Pyeong- Seoul-Busan-Jeju Doable in 9 days?

Actually I beg to differ with above comments about New year%26#39;s day. Although it isn%26#39;t big as Lunar new year%26#39;s celebration, it%26#39;s still a holiday, so many koreans will be out traveling, especially to popular destination like Jeju island. I always hear about traffic jams and big crowds at hotel and resorts from Korean TV news. I would book my flight soon since you got two weeks left. Since you are traveling in winter why not pop a visit to Hot spring? If you are going to Yong Pyeong you are not too far from Seorak-san National Park (http://www.lifeinkorea.com/travel2/Nparks/296) which has spectacular winter scenery and hot spring resort like Seorak Waterpia (…visitkorea.or.kr/enu/SI/SI_EN_3_1_1_1.jsp…)

agree re flights; however KTX should be ok up to the day of travel if you%26#39;re prepared to be flexible on times.

You should bustle up booking everything - flights, accommodation and local transportation - before you come to Korea for the year-end season. Many Koreans are traveling around to celebrate new year%26#39;s eve.

Agreed. You should book now for the New Year%26#39;s sitch. But also reconsider the Incheon to Yongpyong deal. What time do you get in to Incheon? If you can get to the Kosukterminal in Seoul by, um, 7 or 8 PM, maybe. Still, that bus will be to Kangnung on the coast. Train? Forget it. Better to shack it up in Seoul and early morning bus (public) or set up a package to Hwaengnae (Yongpyung base). Also, the accommodation situation at Yongpyung WILL be booked through Feb. That is, unless you are prepared to pay in the amount of three hundred or so U.S. Better to stay in Hwaegae at the bottom of the mountain in the village at a yogwon for thirty or forty thousand won, rent your skis there which will save you another half compared to renting at the slopes and grab a bus, shuttle, or even taxi up. But, do be careful with the transport to, within, and from Yongpyong if you go that route. Of course, there is always Yangjae resort just south of Suwon, south Seoul with great slopes and less crowded environs for ya....

    Tours in Korea

Will be going to Jeju island for a week with my husband in June, thought it would be interesting to make a tour of the return to Seoul rather than just fly back, had 1 week or thereabouts in mind for the trip. As it is a limited time, I had hoped that the usual tour operators would offer tours but I cannot find any. Any suggestions or is a bespoke tour really the only option? If so, has anyone any experience of this? Also, what would be a good itinerary (prefer a mixture of culture, UNESCO Worldheritage sites, architecture and - yes, that too - shopping). Any must taste foods? Any other musts? I really would like to make the most of our short time there. Thanks

    Tours in Korea

In your position, I%26#39;d fly back to Busan, take train to Gyeongju, where you can see history, religion, architecture. Stay a day or two, then KTX train back to Seoul.

I don%26#39;t know any other way to do it, aprt from self drive.

    In G try ssambap!

    Tours in Korea

Hi Ethelman2, Is it simple to get to Gyongju by KTX? I%26#39;m just afraid that everything would be in Korean and we might get lost. Do you recommend any hotels/hostels there or tours? Also, we%26#39;re thinking of going to Jeju Island as well. Any advice would be great! Thanks!

    CeeNetherlands,

I am sorry that you can not find any tour operators who can easily arrange stuffs for you. I find many local agencies are mainly catered to natives. T.T

I definitely recommend Gyeongju for at least 2-day trip. You can fly from Jeju to Busan, which is less than two hours away. I heard you can take shuttle bus from airport to Gyeongju. Ask your hotel concierge in Jeju if they can help you out with transportation and lodging in Gyeongju. Or I find this site has pretty good info on traveling within Korea, http://www.lifeinkorea.com/travel2/Kyongju

Afterward, may I suggest visit one or two beautiful buddhist temples in Korea? Haein-sa is my favorite because scenery around that temple is quite beautiful, and you can see very old and famous wood block of buddhist teachings. Another plus is that temple is in Gayasan mountain national park, so you can enjoy some outdoor activities. I am not a big fan of temple stay program where you experience monks%26#39;s daily routine, because I need a mordern toilet, but many finds it very unique experience. http://www.lifeinkorea.com/travel2/Temples/67

Although this temple is in same province with Gyeongju, I don%26#39;t think there is any direct bus or train to temple, so you may have to rent a car and drive there. Or you can take train to Dae-gu, then take a bus to temple.

If visiting temple is too much trouble for you then take KTX back to Seoul. You can also squeeze visiting DMZ or Korean National Folk Village which is in outskirts of Seoul, or nearby water park/theme park, Everland.

As per shopping, I think the best bet is Seoul (Namdaemoon and Dongdaemoon markets, Itaewon and Myeong-dong and Insa-dong area) As per food, there will lots of choices! From street foods to beef and pork bbqs and totally vegetarian temple cuisine. Since you will be in June, which can real hot and muggy in Korea, try ice cold noodle soup called Naeng-myeon.

Oh, I forgot to mention there is English announcement at KTX.

to get to Gyeongju by train, take ktx to Dongdaegu and change to a slow train. In Seoul, go to Seoul station with a print out of the train combination you want. the website is called ';Korail'; (google it) or I have

    www.korail.com/en/rv/pr21100/w_pr21110.jsp.

key ';transfer'; and put Gyeongju into destination.

I confess to staying in Hilton and renting a car there. Hilton has a good buffet restaurant- I normally hate this sort of eating but this is exceptional. For a car you need an International Driving Permit, but I usually get a car for about 35 Euros for 24 hours. Driving is dead easy.

    Don%26#39;t stay in Hotel Kolon.

The location to stay is called Bomum Lake Resort; there are hotels of all classes there. You can get maps etc.

If you don%26#39;t have a car you can take a local tour bus or hire a taxi for a day.

Let me know if you need more info.

Cee: Korea and ALL of the public transport (not buses)including the KTX is English friendly. You will be fine with your own Euro knowledge. Now, to your time frame which is a concern for me and you. If you MUST got tour, then there are plenty respectable ones out there. But why? Are you flying home from Jeju? Seoul? Trains are good, maybe, here, but I need some more info. UNESCO sites would mean for me Sokkruam. Kyungju. Close to Busan kind of. You could limit your tour to the southeast region but then you would miss Seoul. I guess that would be like going through Amsterdam, on a night train. You will love Jeju and the pen... Shoot me a mssg if you need any more info..

    Haveafinetrip...

    CeeNetherlands:

sorry, the info in my posts may have misled you. Apparently they are not accurate, I have been told.

I would therefore discount them and listen to others.

I am sorry if what I have said has been unhelpful- I posted on the basis of my own personal experience, so it was true at least for me..

Thanks all for the great tips and ideas (keep them coming if you have any more), I%26#39;ll be looking into all of them to see what is possible in our time frame (still to be negotiated with husband). Our (=my) idea is to fly to Seoul, then fly onto Jeju (perhaps staying a few days in Seoul first?) and then making a tour of the return to Seoul for the flight back so that we can see as much as possible of the country with a variety of things.

I%26#39;m glad to hear that English is not a problem as I%26#39;d be happy to organize something myself as long as timing and hotels are ok (as in decent standard and easily reachable, by email and car) and information is available in English. While we don%26#39;t want to be totally ';beat up'; afterwards, we do like to keep a fast pace (you know the kind of trip: ';13 European countries in 10 days';).

    Hello -

2 questions for anyone who may be able to help...

QUESTION #1: I have a 12-hr (06am-1800)layover with Asiana Airlines en route from Chicago to Bangkok coming up in February 09. Are there any good areas to sleep and/or rest in the airport during the day. I have heard this is a very nice airport with good facilities.

QUESTION#2: Are there any easy and quick tours for transit passengers....USA transit passenger / VISA?? Just how reasonable are these tours?

Thank you for all your help!!

Incheon airpt - #1:Good place to sleep / rest #2easy tours

Hi, I don%26#39;t know about Asiana but we%26#39;ll fly with Korean Air and the airline provide us a hotel room (Hyatt Regency Incheon) for overnight as our connecting flight to Paris is nearly 20 hours. It worth asking your travel agency or the airline itself as my travel agency told me that if I chose to fly with Asiana, they%26#39;ll provide me a hotel room and diner + breakfast - just same as Korean Air though I don%26#39;t know which hotel they%26#39;ll put their customers in.

Incheon airpt - #1:Good place to sleep / rest #2easy tours

Very interesting - I hope they do provide this hotel. Thanks so much for the info.!!

Asiana does provide the day-use hotel as well (it was the June Hotel at Airport City when I went earlier in the year). They give you the choice of the free day hotel or a free tour to all with a layover %26gt; 8 hrs. You must check in at the Asiana Transit Desk at Incheon to get the freebie - Asiana rocks by the way! I%26#39;m also going on OZ through ICN to BKK in mid-Feb - they gave me a 27 hr layover due to service cancellation on the SEA-ICN run + they gave me a free night%26#39;s room too, but I declined the room on the outbound leg because I%26#39;d rather stay in downtown Seoul and see a bit of S. Korea. Here%26#39;s the transit tour website:

    Weather

    Hi all,

Can somesone who just came back from Korea recently tell me if Korea is extremely cold now (especially for a Singaporean). Just wondering if able to get through if I put on cashmere thermal wear, wool sweater and downfeather jacket as I will be travelling to Korea from 15 - 21 December. Thank you!

    Weather

    Hi,

Currently it is about 5 deg during the day, which is fine to walk around, however it could always go down to -10 or lower! I recommend layering than bringing a huge suitcase full of clothes. Pantyhose (Stockings, leggings) underneath pants really helps!

    Asiana

    Hi all,

Does anyone know if Asiana Air offers complimentary slcoholic beverages on long haul flights from the US?

    Just curious...have a flight coming up :)

    Thanks!

    Asiana

Oh yes! I believe it%26#39;s beer and wine in economy and the sky%26#39;s the limit in higher classes. I fly Asiana to Vietnam and it%26#39;s pure heaven - a really neat little airline. Many people prefer the service over Singapore%26#39;s since the FA%26#39;s are more down to earth. You should go to the Asiana Club section over on Flyertalk for more Asiana news.

    happy contrails!

    Asiana

I always fly OZ (Asiana). What class do you fly, and do you know what aircraft type?

thanks! i will be flying the regular class...so i guess just beer and wine for me! ;)

';travel class';?; you%26#39;ll get 34 inch seat pitch; maybe also AVOD for entertainment depending on where you%26#39;re flying from/ to. I think you fly on a 777, of which 50 per cent have this feature.

Try the Korean meal- bibimbap (hot rice to which you add beef and veggies on your own plate).

be prepared for ';The Delighters';, who will make up faces of female passengers, and give moisturising masks to male pax, in all classes.

Great Question. Asiana is great. Customer oriented, pro, new, all, the way it is here (Asia) and the way it always should be. You will enjoy that long haul. However, to differ from the previous poster, bibimpop (fried rice with veggies and red pepper paste) is good but you%26#39;ll have plenty of that in Asia wherever you go... Go beef and red wine (bottomless...)... Have your bibimbop in Insadong, not on the long haul.... Enjoy...

    thanks!

my family and i do not eat beef, but we eat everything else. Should we call asiana and make sure that they note our dietary restrictions?

I would reserve a special meal if I were you - just one word of caution. The seafood breakfast, if offered, should always be declined - at all cost! Can you imagine seafood warming for 10-12 hours?

just to clarify: bibimbap as served on Asiana is boiled rice, served with side dishes, and with vegetables AND beef in separate dishes that you put into the hot rice together with hot pepper paste.

Note the beef; so you%26#39;ll want to try to get a special meal.

I%26#39;ve tried, and regret to say that it didn%26#39;t work.

However the crew made up sandwiches (cheese)to allow my travelling companion to eat.

My friend went that island about one year ago. He likes outdoor stuffs so he said it was real beautiful and he was able to get by despite the fact he doesn%26#39;t speak any Korean. Overnight in Seoul

Hi all we are travelling to UK with Korean Air from Australia and we are getting an overnight stay in Seoul.

We land 17:35 and fly out the next afternoon at 16:55, they will put us up at a hotel overnight could be the Hyatt.

My question is is there enough time to see a little bit of Soeul, during this time and if so what is the best.

    Overnight in Seoul

Hi, I hope this link is useful for you:

    english.visitkorea.or.kr/enu/TR/TR_EN_5_5.jsp

I think you have to go to Seoul, as Hyatt Regency Incheon is an airport hotel - 3 minutes bus ride from the terminal- and if you start at early morning, a half day tour can do!

This is what I read on virtualtourist site about hop on hop off bus- I wonder if the bus still operate at present as we%26#39;ll go to Paris with Korean air too; but we %26#39;ll have a stopover in Seoul on the way back home so lot of time for us .

%26gt;%26gt;The Seoul City Tour Bus is the best way to see Seoul%26#39;s main tourist attractions. It is great value and a great service.

The main Downtown Tour route is: 1 Gwanghwamun 2 Deoksugung 3 Nandaemun Market 4 Seoul Station 5 USO 6 Yongsan Station 7 War Memorial of Korea 8 US Army Yongsan Base 9 Itaewon 10 Crown Hotel 11 Myeongdong 12 Namsangol Traditional Korean Village 13 Sofitel Ambassador Hotel 14 National Theater 15 Namsan Seoul Tower 16 Hyatt Hotel 17 Tower Hotel 18 Shilla Hotel 19 Dongdaemun Market 20 Daehango 21 Changyeonggung 22 Changdeokgung 23 Insadong 24 Cheong Wa Dae 25 National Folk Museum 26 Gyeonbokgung 27 Police museum 28 Sejong Center for Performing Arts.

There is a guide on every bus, who speaks English, Japanese and bits of a few other languages too. There are also free audio headsets giving detailed information in five languages.

The terminal is in front of Donghwha DFS in Gwanghwanun, but you can board the bus at any of the 28 stops on the circular route.

The buses depart every half hour from 09.00 unitil 19.00. They take 2 hours to cover the circuit, so the last bus arrives back at 21.00. You just hop on and off the buses wherever you see the cylindrical, red, white and blue Seoul City Tour sign poles.

    A 1-day ticket costs just 10,000 won for adults and 8,000 won for children. You can buy the tickets on the bus. %26lt;%26lt;

    Did you leave yet?

The neighborhood north of downtown where the US embassy and the 2 papaces are is great. There is a Natl. Folk Museum and Museum of Korea and a very cute neighborhood with lots of good restaurants. Not far away, there%26#39;s nice buildings and goo shopping at Insadong.

I hope your optimism is justified. Last time i did this, I got put up in Hotel June in ';Incheon Airport Town';, which does not reach Hyatt standards.

It%26#39;s OK, but not 5 star.

It%26#39;s not at the airport and the only local transport I could find was the metro/subway (to Gimpo airport, where you change to another line into Seoul)

I gave up Asiana%26#39;s free hotel offer at INC just because I want to spend more time downtown in Seoul - my layover is 27 hours. Nothing much to see in Airport City or Incheon Island except for the waterfront area I believe? I%26#39;ve decided to apply for one of the free Goodwill Guides, and if I don%26#39;t get one, I%26#39;ll just make my way around solo (hate those regimented bus tours!)

Thanks for your info, this helps a lot

    Jeju Island

    Hi

It is worthwhile to make a trip to Jeju island in mid-December? Spoke with someone from the Korea Tourism Organisation, she didn%26#39;t seem to encourage a trip there -- citing traveling within the island would a problem due to the lack of public transport on the island.

    Thanks

    Jeju Island

It sounds weired that there is lack tranportaion in the island as Jeju is the most popular or the best sightseeing place in Korea. It is o.k. to visit there in mid Dec. but it would be a bit cold and windy, but no snow.

    Jeju Island

I just got back from Jeju after 2 nites stay there and I personally think that it%26#39;s worth a visit if you haven%26#39;t been. Beautiful scenery but windy and very touristic too. Transport is not a problem there but I find that language is a BIG problem if you cannot speak Korean! Visit the Jusangjeoili (the formation is amazing), Yongduam Rock (Dragon Head Rock). The submarine tour wasn%26#39;t that spectacular and the teddy bear museum is fantastic (if you have children). Hope this helps.

Maybe I should make some correction on public tranportation in Jeju island. Even though I frequently visit there, I used to travel by renting a car. One of my friends who is from Jeju said it is not very convenient to look around by public transportation. If you are not moving in a group tour, you%26#39;d rathre rent a car or hire a taxi driver for a couple of days. Otherwise, I don%26#39;t know exactly but you could use buses for tourists.

Are you flying directly into Jeju or from Seoul. I suggest perhaps you want to join a local Jeju tour - that way, your stress of communicating is solved! They have tours from Seoul as well. Other local expert might be able to help you with this. alternatively, seek help from korean tourism office.

I also came back from my holiday in Jeju not too long ago. Like Bibster mentioned, it%26#39;s very beautiful and worth a visit. Most people self drive in Jeju. If there are a few of you, then it is cheaper to rent a car than follow the tour. We also rented a car. Pretty easy to move around with the GPS.

I m also visiting there on early of Jan09, worry about travelling around with public transport because i can t speak korean.

Any local short tour trip available there? for 1 or 2 days

You can check out this tour company:

I%26#39;m just starting to research the area, so any other locations or suggestions for a week%26#39;s stay would be greatly appreciated.

The two hotels are located in a walking distance from Seohyeon station of Bundang line (yellow color). Please find Seoul Subway map below for more information.

As your daughter might alreay know though, there is an express bus between Seohyeon station to Incheon airport. It is the most economical and convienient way to get to and from the airport from Bundang.

    I hope you have a nice time in Seoul.%26gt;%26gt;

The other thing I%26#39;d say is that Seolleung station (next to Samseong, by Coex) is at the end of the Bundang line. There are some good and not pricey hotels around coex. That%26#39;s a good place for food, etc

    Do I need onward/return flight?

    Do I need onward/return flight?

    I don%26#39;t know, but I think you%26#39;ll need an onward/return ticket.

You typically fill in a landing card before arrival, and state on that when you are leaving. If you don%26#39;t complete that, I guess you don%26#39;t get in.

We are thinking of a quick tour of Seoul (about 4-5 hours after transit into city) Has anyone done this or have any recommendations? We were thinking of hiring a guide and driver but it seems very expensive or looking into the transit tours at the airport.

    Thanks

    Transit tour of Seoul

If you look at the ';long layover'; thread of a couple of days ago, you may get some help.

For the transit tour, I%26#39;ve never done one but I did see a review on another forum -see the thread I mentioned.

Beware: it can take a good 90 min to get into Seoul depending on traffic.

  • Wolmido Island or Nami Island

I only have one day for island visit. Which is a more picturistic place, for relaxing, food, shopping and photo taking? How long do I need to visit the island?

Also I heard of this myeongdong place in chuncheon. Is this the same myeondong shopping district in seoul? Am getting a bit confused.

    Thanks.

    Wolmido Island or Nami Island

I%26#39;d go with Nami Island. Wolmido, although I haven%26#39;t been to in years, I find is not as pristine and with nature..like Nami Island is.

Chuncheon is a completely different city than Seoul, so it is not the same Myeongdong in Seoul. I think they just call it Myeongdong becuz it%26#39;s like the original Myeongdong in Seoul? (Sorry have never been there.)

Anyway, my vote is for Nami Island..many couples go there on dates..

    Wolmido Island or Nami Island

i am planning for a trip to Seoul, base ourselves in Seoul for 7 nights. Is it possible to visit Nami Island from Seoul on a day trip? If yes, what is the recommended route (bus/train)? We are travelling with 2 small children (age 3 and 6 yrs old).

Woolmiido has shops a boardwalk and a ferry terminal.

If you can ignore the chemical plant in sight along the coast -not actualy intrusive, it%26#39;s an OK and cheap day out from Seoul (subway to Incheon-si and walk)

Myeong-dong in Seoul and Myeong-dong in Chuncheon is completely different place. They have just same name. One day trip to Nami-sum(Nami island) is possible. Train is available but I recommend the direct bus from Insa-dong(Tour bus depot is next the Pagoda park).

    Insa-dong -%26gt; Nami-sum 9:30 am

    Nami-sum -%26gt; Insa-dong 4:00 pm

    (except Tuesday)

round trip fare is 15,000WON for adult.

    (23,000WON include the ferry)

The traffic is heavy on weekend.

    Tel) 02-753-1245 (Nami-sum Seoul center)

The most famous food in Chuncheon is Dak-gal-bi(chicken) and Mak-guk-su(noodle). I recommend you try these food if you visit Chuncheon Myeongdong.

looks like wolmido can be done as 1/2 day trip, compared to nami that requires 1 full daytrip.

we may want to visit wolmido (as part of our planned trip to seoul nov/dec) - would a visit in the morning better compared to evening? or vice versa. i assume most shops will open like after 10am - probably an evening visit is better? but its winter - will shops close early then?

seems like a nice place for my 2 kids (age 3 and 6).

    …triptokorea.com/english/viewtopic.php…

    comments welcome.

I have been to both. And, I vote for Nami Island. Yes, it takes a day.

Wolmido is not that attractive to me. Maybe, becoz i see the sea in hong kong everyday.

We found Muui island just west of airport very easy to manage. Go to airport. Visit information centre who will give you useful information and map. Bus to ferry 15 mins ferry journey 5 mins and then you are on Muui. We took local bus 15 mins to Hannagae Beach . Nice safe place for kids. But we definitely felt that is was the end of the season. I wonder if the local bus is as regular outside holiday time?

Have been to Nami Island two times when I was teaching nearby. The first time was last November 07, the ornamental fountain and stream had turned to ice and gave a very pretty effect along with frost on the ground. The second time was 25 April 08, it was dry, dusty and the grass had disappeared from the thousands of feet tramping over it every day and the dry, summer weather. Yes it is very popular, but also very crowded, the eating places are unimpressive and I could not use the word ';pristine'; to describe it. Granted, there is a lane bounded by tall trees giving a cool feeling when one is under it.

It is a long way to go with small children, maybe there has been enough rainfall now to make it lush and green. Shopping consists of a UNICEF shop and a sovenir shop plus some restaurants and take-aways.

Muui Island suggested by op would be worth investigating. I hope you enjoy where ever you go to visit.

I posted this question and I shall end with my feedback. I am now at Incheon airport, ready to leave Seoul after a few days here. Visited both Wolmido Island and Nami Island. Wolmido is a real disappointment. I won%26#39;t even call it an island. It is right at the end of a small town and is very deserted with no sights to behold. Nami Island is 100 times better than Wolmido....yeah, may be exagerating a little here but just want to give an idea of how I compare between the two islands. Nami Island has more things to see, more fun and much beautiful than Wolmido. Would definitely recommend Nami Island for anyone who can%26#39;t decide between the two.

what time does the last bus leaves wolmido for the subway station?

    Holiday to korea in Dec

    Hi all,

I will be in Korea in mid Dec for about 8 days. Planning the itinernary now.. so is wondering what is there to do besides snow-skiing and hot springs? Will it be too cold for shopping and other stuffs? I am not quite a history person so visiting one palace and Korean villiage will be good enough for me. Is the korean village open in winter?

If shopping is available, will there be any flea market besides the normal shopping malls?

Is it a good idea to stay in Seoul for a few days first then move to ski and hotspring resorts? or vice versa?

    cheerios

    Holiday to korea in Dec

    HI Aurra,

Mid december will be pretty cold, the low must be going beyond zero, so be prepared for that, moreover you ar efrom tropics..

Practically, there is nothing much to see at Seoul, if you dont like palace much .... I suggest you may go to Olympic park, long open area with outdoor sculpture garden, u may take an evening ferry at Han River, if you lie nature, u may go to Seoul Grand Park.. lot oif open space , including some nominal hiking route,, i like that very much... recently Seoul inaugerated a stream at the city centre, not very good, spend some time there, avoid teh weekend.

Namdaemun market is at teh centre of city, not actually aflea market, but u can get everything cheaper, if u like cloth ( for ladies , as usual ! ) u may like to go Dongdaemun ....

if you like departmental stor hopping, there are quite a few , very central of teh city.. Sinseage, Lotte , Hyundai...

Ski earlier or seoul stay earlier may be strictly on you.... as here all teh ski resort have artifical snow making machine.. so u will get snow, definitely.. till March End.

    Enjoy.. have a pleasent trip...

Let me know if you want something specific. I may not help about accomodation, as i dont stay at Seoul.

    Holiday to korea in Dec

The DMZ Tour is a 1/2 day tour and is very unique. You can enter a tunnel dug under the DMZ by North Korea. The War Memorial also includes an excellent museum on the history of Korea and its wars throughout the ages. There are also several city tour packages available. Be prepared for cold weather.

Thanks for all the suggestions ya... weather will be beyond zero...think i will pack more clothings then.. its seems like its will be winter sales then....hahahah thanks ya...

    Hi, Aurra,

Do u like to share your holiday trip there last Dec?

I thought of going Seoul and Cheju this Dec too.

    Regards,

    Hi Aurra,

In answer to your question where to stay first, I would recommend staying in Seoul first. It%26#39;s much more convenient to get to from the airport, you can have all your shopping done then move on to skiing and relaxing.

Shopping is available everywhere in Seoul. I guess it depends on what you%26#39;re looking for. There are various deparment stores around the city, the most upscale would be the Galleria in Apgujeongdong (also a good place for cafes, restaurants and nightlife), the Hyundai in eihter Apgujeongdong (a 20 min walk from Galleria) or Samsung-dong (which is connected to COEX mall, an American type shopping mall with movie theaters) and last but not least the Lotte Department store in Myeongdong which is in the heart of the city and a great place to start your tours as it%26#39;s near the palaces, Myeongdong a shopping district itself.

If you%26#39;re into more unique and/or traditional shopping you could try Samcheong-dong. Not many shops but here quality makes up for quantity. Also there are a lot of amazing restaurants along this strip.

Then there%26#39;s the bargain, market type. If you%26#39;re into clothes I would recomend Dongdaemun. Namdaemun is more for electronic goods rather than anything else.

Itaewon also has its share of clothes shopping and Antique furniture, but for clothes shopping, you need to know your way around and I would recommend Itaewon more for its restaurants and bars than anything else.

    hi, baragalo,

    Thanks for the info.

    Hi Baragalo..

Can you tell me hotels that are near shopping area in Seoul. Not too expensive as I have 3 kids with me plus my husband.

Actually I planned to stay 2 nights in SEoul b4 going to Yongpyong resort for another 2 nights. However, is there any suggestions as to how should i leave some of my luggage without bringing to the ski resort. It would be troublesome for me to carry the baggage to and fro the ski resort. I have 1 more night in seoul b4 I depart to Hong Kong. Pls help....

    Accomodation in Seoul

    Hi Everyone,

I%26#39;m planning to go to Seoul for ski resort. Most probably will be going to Yongpyong ski resort. Any recommendation of accomodation which is accessible in that resort. BTW, please also tell me hotels which is near the shopping paradise. Not too expensive....

Thank you in advance for your advise.

    Anita

    Accomodation in Seoul

When are you going? If it is Dec, I think you would have a difficult time finding cheap and good lodgings at this time..

There are quite afew hotels nearby.I stayed at Dragon Valley the other time.. But I find it very expensive.

    Accomodation in Seoul

It will be on 20/12/08 to 27/12/08. This is my first time to the ski resort. Wondering whether I will be able to stand the coldness of the area. But the most important thing now is to get accomodation.

Do recommend hotels that are accesible and affordable in Seoul too.

Oh.. hahah I will be going to Seoul again from 17Dec to 1Jan. Maybe, I will see you there..

Haha, anyway..you better book fast. The previous trip to korea, I stayed in Seoul Tower ville. I find the rate rather cheap about S$150/night for the biggest room which can house 8people and still remain very spacious. The rooms are nice as well.. It is more like a service apartment. You have your own toilets, kitchen etc. It is conveniently located near to Myeong Dong subway station. The only bad thing about Seoul Tower Ville is that we have to climb upslope which is very tiring.

This time round, I did not book rooms from them again as my parents will be going along. They cant climb! haha. So we decided to stay at namsan guesthouse instead. I had visited it when I was in Korea the previous time. From what I remember, the rooms looked not too bad and is lower on the slope as compared to Seoul Tower Ville

This time round, I will also not be staying in the ski resort..cause I find them too expensive. I remembered that time we paid S$400/night for a 4-persons room!!!

I will still be going skiing (still deciding which ski resort to go to)but just go in the early morn and come back at night....

Which ski resort do you intend to go this time? Actually I%26#39;m not sure whether I would be able to get lodging there. Just book with one of the website which offer package for 3D2N. Still waiting n waiting..

Do you have any idea how far is the Lotte World or Everland park from Myongdong? Still struggling to collect info as the due date is coming..helpppp

Lotte World is easily accessible.. . Just get off at Jamsil Subway Station (Seoul Subway Line No.2 and No.8) Exit No.4. Lotte World is directly connected to the Subway Station. Everland is slightly more troublesome.. but it is a must go place.. I find it much nicer than toyko Disney Land!

From Gangnam Subway Station, go out of Exit 6 鈫?Take bus 5002 (takes 40 mins / bus fare: 1,600 won)

6 Days in February - what should we do?

My wife and I will stay in South Korea from February 14-20, 2009 and would like to experience as much as possible. What would our dear tripadvisor fellows suggest us to do? We would like to travel on our own (public transport or car rental) and we are more interested in people and life than in museums and monuments, but of course we would like to see the most important ones.

As we are only there for 6 nights - how long should we stay in Seoul and, if any, which other places are worth visiting in that short time?

Any help for our planning is highly appreciated!

    Thanks

    Wolfgang + Sandy

6 Days in February - what should we do?

I think you%26#39;d better move your posting to Seoul forum where many people who have travelled Korea could give you some advices. If I were you, though I am Korean, I would spend 3 nights in Seoul and 1-2 nights in Gyoungju (Kyoungju) and other 1 night back in Seoul but travel outside of seoul. Any combination would be o.k.according to your itinerary. Visit the websites below and make an approx.timetable based on your favorites then revise your schedule while referring to the comments from other advisors.

  • Any hotels in Myeong-Dong area ??

Would like to know if there%26#39;s any hotels located in Myeong-Dong area that is directly on top of Metro Station?? Id so, what will be the hotel and metro station name as well??

    Many thsnks in advance....

Any hotels in Myeong-Dong area ??

sorry; your question not quite clear: do you mean ';very close to'; or do you mean actually AT a metro station?

If the latter, then I don%26#39;t think there is.

Ibis is about 5 mins walk from Euljiro-1-ga station; I%26#39;m told Biz hotel is close to Euljiro-3-ga station but haven%26#39;t ever been able to find it.

Prince is pretty close to Myeongdong station, as is Sejong and Savoy is about 3 mins walk from there.

Sejong is, I think, on an airport bus route.

Check this information, though, as people tell me my information is out of date.

Any hotels in Myeong-Dong area ??

Lotte is high class hotel about 3min walk from Subway line 2 Euljiro 1-ga station. It%26#39;s about 5 min walking distance from Myeong Dong area. There is also a huge Lotte department store next to hotel.

The place I%26#39;m staying is 1 minute from the Seodaemun Station subway line 3 (Vabien II - $84.)

It%26#39;s rated quite highly and the airport lime (not KAL) stops right in front of the hotel.

Can recommend the Ibis Myeong Dong which is just across the road from Lotte. OK, you have to go down a long flight of steps to walk under the road and likewise to get up again ( generally there are no escalators). Don%26#39;t think you will get anything ';directly'; on top of a subway. Anyway, 5 or 10 minutes walk is nothing.

    Cheers.

Why not try homestay or guesthouse?? there are quite afew near myeong dong area and they are cheap and nice!

Frommer%26#39;s 2008 also like the Ibis MD - ';Set in a fantastic location near the shopping district of MD, this hotel is an exceptional value for the price.'; I believe that all rooms are high up since the lobby is on the 19th floor. Frommer%26#39;s also give 3 stars to Vabien II except that%26#39;s listed under Jongno.

    Compare Korean personality to Japanese

This might be a touchy subject, but I was just wondering if Koreans have many traits in common with the Japanese? I would imagine them to be quite different, but since they%26#39;re neighbors, to also share many personality qualities. Are they as materialistic as the Japanese? Do they read comics constantly? What%26#39;s the attitude toward the US military?

    Compare Korean personality to Japanese

    Hi daawgon,

What an odd question. See if I can help. They are different in manners and culture but having said that, they are also similar. It%26#39;s actually a bl**dy hard one to answer. Both are great peoples.

I don%26#39;t know if Koreans watch any Japanese TV dramas but can say that there is a large following in Japan for Korean TV, i.e. ';Winter Sonata'; (a love story) and ';Chan Geum'; which was a historical drama of the first woman doctor in Korea.

    %26lt;%26lt;%26lt;%26lt; Are they as materialistic as the Japanese?%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;%26gt;

Hell, that sounds like something from behind the old Iron Curtain. The answer is no more so than you and I buddy.

And no, neither of them read comics constantly.

Attitude towards the US Military is probably pretty good though some individuals in the military have let the side down pretty badly at times.

Generally Koreans and Japanese take people at face value. I%26#39;ve never had any problems in either country.

    Cheers.

    Compare Korean personality to Japanese

risking being told (again) that I don%26#39;t know what I%26#39;m talking about:

I was at a temple (Donghaksa) recently- more a nunnery school, I suppose. A group of JP schoolkids appeared; they walked earnestly along in pairs and (I presume, because my Japanese is rudimentary) their teacher said ';look at that';- all eyes turned left. Teacher said something else, and they all looked at the river. They went.

We ate our lunch, and then a Korean school group appeared, mainly again in pairs, but chattering and laughing. Seeing us they shouted ';hi';, so we replied. Then the teacher told them to wander off and look round; some did, some went and chatted to the teacher, and (I suppose they were 11 or so) held the teacher%26#39;s hand for a while (wouldn%26#39;t happen in UK!). Eventually the teacher came over to speak to us, and we chatted about kids. Thry all study after school at ';crammers'; ,and their parent feel education (and esp English) is vital.

Conclusions? Korean kids were like UK kids in the 50s- noisy but not causing trouble and a pleasure to see. The JP kids seemed much more regimented.

My impression is that this is a little true for the JP people as a whole. In Tokyo, people cross the street on a crossing and they take notice of the arrow on the road that tells you which side of the crossing to walk. In Seoul, people cross the road; sometimes they take the crossing but they go whichever side is most convenient to them.

Just my view- don%26#39;t read anything more into it.

    Hi ethelman,

You must have struck an unusually quite bunch. Normally Japanese and korean Kids compete very well in the decibel ratings.

    Cheers.

I guess ethelman2 found well a subtle difference between Korean and Japaneses. Both Korean and Japanese acknowledge that they are quite different each other in characteristics and peronalities. It is mostly because of the location, history and cultural background. So Japan is usally called '; The very close but the most far country'; in Korea, though it connotes historical background of colonialization more.

However, as far as far-east asian values concerned, Koreans are similar with Japaneses, rather than Chinese, although confucianism, the governing ideology ruled Korea for more than 500 years until early 20C, came from China.

But pls don%26#39;t generalize my opinion because I am one of the people who has multi-standards toward Japan.

Sure enough that this issue is very critical in Korea.

The impression I get out of all this is that Koreans (in general) are far less xenophobic than Japanese, but both are traditional with nationalistic customs, and the youth are like youth everywhere (worldly wise and rebelling against tradition in general)? I also get the impression that the Korean sense of humor is much more Western than that of the Japanese. Am I correct?

Koreans I know are very British (not American) in their sense of humour- generalising of course. These Koreans have a great ability to laugh at themselves, and a sense of irony. In UK terms, they can take the p*ss out of themselves- something not unknown in the US but (from our UK perspective) by no means universal.

    I have still seen and heard anti JP things in Korea; the classic was during JP-KR friendship year, where an official said of (I think) the last empress: ';Even though she was Japanese some Korean people liked her.';

Given the things that went on in the ';colonial period'; I can easily understand antipathy.

I know a few JP friends who are learning Korean, which I think is still not usual. But a good thing to do, IMHO.

Again another similarity in that Japanese also have an earthy sense of humour closely resembling that of the British. Japanese, like the Koreans, are also willing to make fun of themselves.

    Cheers.

Welcome to the Seoul forum, and I guess to Tripadvisor!

I have no idea, so will back out in the hope soemone here can help.

    Stay in Gyeongju

HI, anyone know where is a good place to stay in Gyeongju? Also, what is the latest time a person can leave Seoul for Gyeongju by train? and the earliest time to leave Gyeongju for Seoul? I have the kR pass so travelling by train is not a problem.

    Anyone can help?

    Thanks.

    Sharon

    Stay in Gyeongju

I recommend the Bomum Lake resort area, which is where the better hotels are. There are lots there. I always stay in the Hilton, on the lakeside, as it is often quite cheap.

The resort is about 10-12,000 won in a taxi from the railway station.

The very last train from Seoul is a saemaul (so-called ';luxury express';) that leaves at 22:20 for Dongdaegu (arr 1:20 am). Then an ordinary train from there to Gyeongju gets you in at 03:30 am.

You would do better to get the 19:30 KTX to Dongdaegu, change to a saemaul to arrive at 10:30 pm.

I%26#39;ve been on that, and the saemaul has been delayed, by 30 mins but there are still taxis at Gyeongju.

The earliest train from Gyeongju leaves at about 07:45 to reach Seoul (again change at Dongdaegu) about 10:40

    Stay in Gyeongju

    Hi,

Thanks for the advice. I%26#39;ve managed to stay at Gyeongju Kolon hotel that is very near Bulgaksa, which makes it very convenient for the visting the place. :) Managed to catch the train you mentioned to Gyeongju and also tried the KTX on the way back.

Gyeongju is really very very beautiful and fall seems to be eternalised here by the time I visited.

    glad it worked out!

    Long layovers in Feb.

I%26#39;m traveling from NY to Phnom Penh on Asiana in February and I have 2 very long layovers in Seoul. I was all set to see the city when I realized that it%26#39;s going to be winter in February! I wasn%26#39;t planning on bringing a winter coat since it will be warm in Cambodia. Here are my options:

Layer-up and take a transit tour of Seoul. Do they allow time for shopping/eating?

Spend some time in the Asiana Lounge (I%26#39;m flying business class and I arrive at 6am) and then spend a few hours at the Haesu Waterpia Spa.

Just tour Seoul on my way home, which will be March 1st. Will it be dramatically warmer then?

I definitely do want to see Seoul. Are there things that I shouldn%26#39;t miss?

    Thanks for your help!

    Long layovers in Feb.

I think that (sorry, Tripadvisor!) there%26#39;s a review of the transit tour on ';flyertalk'; that may help you; on the Asiana forum.

    Long layovers in Feb.

I went to Cambodia, Vietnam and Korea from late Feb to early March this year. Sorry to say that Seoul%26#39;s weather is quite similar to NY, so if you want to go out, bring winter coat. Don%26#39;t you have to bring one anyway, cause you will need one once you arrive back at JFK? Visiting Korean spa is a great idea! I never felt cleaner after my body got vigorously scrubbed at one of those jjim-jil-bang! Oh, I also liked the foot massage I got from Cambodia.

Thanks for the advice. I was going to bring a fleece and maybe a rain jacket instead of my winter coat. I hate to bring a coat with me, just to get to the airport and back. I was just in FLA last weekend and that seemed to work ok. Of course it wasn%26#39;t Feb.

I was thinking that i might be able to leave a coat in the Asiana Lounge for 2 weeks! Just leave it in the coat closet (or ask if I can) after I%26#39;m done touring, and then pick it up on my way home! Of course, not a coat I%26#39;d be sad to lose. I will post that idea on the Flyer Talk forum and see what the frequent flyers have to say!

Spas are a must! Anything else a must-see/do in Seoul?

    Thanks!

grabbing info from ';the other place'; I mentioned: ask Asiana, you may be entitled to a free tour. It has walking, and you get lunch, and it takes 5 hours

I have the same problem with a coat, and I finally decided to just abandon my Columbia ski jacket at Incheon after I spend a day in Seoul. I%26#39;m also on Asiana to BKK and returning from HAN. Remember that Asiana gives the free day-use hotel at INC - check in with their transit desk. I was there in March and it was quite nippy then, and I imagine Feb will be downright frigid! I seriously doubt if the airline would consider holding coats for any length of time?

Since I%26#39;m going on a frequent flyer ticket, I don%26#39;t get a free hotel room, but I do get the use of their lounge since I%26#39;m flying business class. I%26#39;m going to search the thrift store in the NY area. Maybe I can find a coat that I wouldn%26#39;t mind loosing, or that easy to layer with. The problem is that I have 2 long layovers...one on the way there and one on the way back!

You might try the Campmor retail store in Jersey - they carry discounted sportswear - most of it previous year stuff at good discounts. They also run an online/catalog business. Sort of an upscale Army/Navy store:

    long layover at Incheon!

    Hi all,

I have a long layover at Incheon on my flight back to the US. I arrive in Seoul at 8:40AM, and my flight departs at 6pm (meaning I would probably have to be back at the airport around 4pm?). Does anyone know if this is an appropriate time frame to go into the city? Are there tour guides? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

    long layover at Incheon!

Hi, I suppose you would have about 3-4 hours in Seoul, because the traveling time between Incheon airport to Seoul is about 90 min each way. If you want quick visit, I recommend take KAL limousine bus that heads to City hall area. There small but very traditional Deoksugung Palace (…visitkorea.or.kr/enu/SI/SI_EN_3_1_1_1.jsp…) across from city hall. You can also check out traditional open market, Namdaemoon market and nearby shopping district of Myeong-dong area which are only 1 subway stop or quick taxi ride or 15 min walk from city hall area. If you still have time, try to visit Insa-dong which is like Soho which has many galleries, souvenir shops and many wonderful cafes and restaurants.

There is transit tours available from airport which i never did, but sounds pretty convenient. (…visitkorea.or.kr/enu/SI/SI_EN_3_5_1.jsp)

    long layover at Incheon!

    Things to do in POHANG?

Have you contacted / joined the %26#39;Tour2Korea'; website? It Helped my partner and I to plan our trip to South Korea last October..We stayed in Itaewon as our base and toured from there.. loved it ! and want to return very soon. I also contacted the korean tourist information office in Sydney..as there wasn%26#39;t one in Adelaide...They were so helpful and sent me a lot of great info booklets, maps etc...perhaps as you are in Sydney you may be able to visit the office personally. I%26#39;m sure they will give you as much help as they possibly can..The korean people are wonderful as is their beautiful country.. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did..

Are you teaching there? I am also a teacher..and interested in what you will be teaching there.

    Cheers

    Hey Redstar,

Thanx for the info. Have you considered working in Korea?? There are many ';English Camps'; for the whole of Jan (Winter camps) and from Mid July-Mid August (Summer camps).

This is the 3rd time for me in Korea in 2006 as its a great place to travel in and the people are nice.

If u and ur partner had any sort of Uni degree both can do it, share a room (free accomodation when working) and get paid very well for the experience.... then add on a few weeks before or after and you should be able to return home cash neutral, as i have been doing :)

    Cheers :)

I have been in Pohang for about a month now and things to do in Pohang wow not a busy location but still a few good things to do here that I have found so far. I live in the MoonDuk area. I suggest a trip to a suana or jimjimbah sorry my spelling of Korean sucks. Also while you are here take a walk through Jukdo Market. It is an open air fish market smells fishy but it is an experience. The beaches are nice but it is a bit cold now but still nice to see the water if you are like me. I hear Daegu is a place to be but I have yet to be there. Also if you like bars there are plenty but for me if you want to be able to speak English for a night with no worries Mindy%26#39;s bar near Jukdo Market is good open from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. U.S service men and women go there and a few of us teachers as well. Other than that enjoy the food and the culture of Korea. Hope this helps a little.
