Help with intinerary

My wife and I are just starting to plan a trip to Korea for May/June. We%26#39;ll be there for 10 days. 3 in Seoul and the rest we%26#39;re just researching now. We like hiking and scenery. We were considering Jeju, but the extra plane ride is turning us off a bit. Where do you all recommend for the remaining 7 days? Should we suck up the extra plane ride (more time in airports and making connections does not sound fun to us) and go to Jeju or are there other beautiful places that are comparable to Jeju without as much hassle?

Thanks!

I sound like a scratched record; sorry! As always I%26#39;d recommend Gyeongju. Hiking in the Seokkuram area and on Namsan (South mountain) would both give you a good day out. And then in the Daejeon area, you could take a bus/taxi/ car out west and hike around Donghak ';Temple';, acrosss towards Kongju.

You could do both these by train from Seoul: so KTX to Dongdaegu and then on by local train to Gyeongju for a couple of nights, then back to Daejeon (say to Riviera or Yousung hotel) for another 2 nights, eventually back to Seoul.

Flight to Jeju is only one hour-long. Plus you will fly from domestic airport of Kimpo, so the traveling time is comparable to taking train ride to Gyeongju or other southern provinces. Jeju island has warmest climate in Korea so you can see quite different sceneries such as volcano mountain, many waterfalls, cliffs and caves and nice beaches. Plus it probably have best resort hotel in Korea. I recommend you stay at least 2 days there.

Gyeonju is quite nice too with many historical sites and temples plus it%26#39;s close to Busan, Andong Hahoe Village and other southern regions around there.

I have been to four national mountain parks in Korea, Mt. Gayasan in Gyeongsangnam-do province; Mt. Bukhansan near Seoul; Mt. Seoraksan in Gangwon-do province and Mt. Hallasan in Jeju-do province. All of them are really good Mt. Seoraksan is my favorite if I have to make choice.

Instead of going all the way up to Sorak, why not go to Jiri-san which is in the Daegu area? It is a beautiful mountain range with many temples scattered throughout. Traveling from Kyongju to Sorak is possible but will take a good day to accomplish. Plus, if you are already hiking for a couple of days on Jeju, might you be a bit hiked out by the time you hit the peninsula? If I were you I would fly into Busan then bus to Kyongju. There is also Haeinsa temple near Daegu which is very cool. Explore the area and then KTX up to Seoul from Daegu...

Enjoy.
