Accommodation off mountain Yongpyong

Can anyone recommend anywhere to stay close to Yongpyong in early January? The resort seems way too expensive and we want to be there for a couple of days. Also, when exactly are the holidays over New Year? Thanks in advance for any info.

Hwaengae is the jumping off point for the Yongpyong resort and slopes. It%26#39;s a fairly small town at the base of the mountain, maybe ten minutes or so by taxi. It caters mainly to the winter ski crowd. Hwaengae has many affordable yogwans (small motels / inns) for 40,000 won or so a night. We ALWAYS stay in the town and taxi to the slopes. It%26#39;s also cheaper to rent your ski stuff, if need be, at one of the shops in town as well. There%26#39;s probably a shuttle from town to the resort area, just ask the front desk. But don%26#39;t worry, plenty of cheap accomodation just outside of Yongpyong.

As far as holidays, well, just try to avoid the weekends. We like to bus out on a Sunday afternoon and ski that night while everyone is packing up to head back to Seoul. Then, Monday morning is perfect. No lines for the lifts and the slopes relatively deserted. No doubt Monday through Thursday is your best bet...

Enjoy!
