Hi everyone,
I%26#39;m looking to travel to Korea in March/April 09 to teach English for a year and have found a job at a school in Yeoung deung po district in Seoul (south west, just below the river -(Subway line #7), which looks really good - but I can%26#39;t find anything about the district online! Does anyone know anything about it?
Mainly
- Does it actually exist? (or have I spelt it wrong!?)
- would be a good place to live?
- does it have decent transport links?
- is it a safe area?
- any websites with photo%26#39;s?
I%26#39;ve never been to Korea before so any other advice greatly appreciated - especially since I%26#39;ve got to stick it out for a year to get my flight home! :-)
Thanks in advance
Jo
Yeoung deung po district in Seoul
You%26#39;ll often find it written Youngdeungpo.
Yes, it%26#39;s safe.
Yes it has good transport.
You%26#39;ll probably have fun with your accent- Koreans hear a lot of US English, and they%26#39;ll maybe find it hard to tune into your verison of it.
I asked for ';water'; -Eng pron: '; wart er';; no-one could get it, so I resorted to ';mul';. ';Oh, wudder'; they replied.
Yeoung deung po district in Seoul
First of all, Korea is a very safe place to live. I wouldn%26#39;t worry about that whatsoever.
Yeungdeungpo is fairly central, on the green line of the subway which circles central Seoul. Like most other districts, it will be a fairly urban experience -- lots of concrete, activity, restaurants, bars, apartment blocks and so forth. The plus side (in my opinion) is that just across the river to the north you have the Hongdae and Shinchon districts which are great for nightlife, eating, and other congregations of expats. When I first came to Korea over ten years ago, that%26#39;s where I hung out and met a lot of people / friends. Today, it still thrives.
Other advice on Korea... Well, keep an open mind, talk to anyone and everyone and ask a lot of questions. Work-wise, it is really hit or miss. There are a lot of really good schools with directors who take care of their teachers and then the other. Just remember that if it is an unbearable situation, there are plenty of other excellent positions here for native speakers. Sometimes it just takes a while to find them...
Good luck with your new job and enjoy Korea while you are here. It really is a special place...
If I can be of any more help, just shoot me a pm...
Hi!
I%26#39;ve been to primary and middle school in Youngdeungpo, I%26#39;m glad you are coming to teach here!
I now live not very far from here too.
By the way, you might find this website run by the district office helpful. (Though I don%26#39;t expect very much...)
